Proverbs 3:24

The book of Proverbs gives us insights into so many different areas of life. The book gives us instruction on how to live our lives for God. Here is a proverb that gives us insight about fear and sleep.

Proverbs 3:24 (ESV)

If you lie down, you will not be afraid;

when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

Having peace at night is from God, not from the fact you live your life right and have lowered your stress factors.   Being able to lie down at night and having all fear removed is an act of God.   Solomon is very familiar with the fact that the wealthy can't sleep in safety simply because of their riches:

Ecclesiastes 5:12 - "The sleep of the working man is pleasant, whether he eats little or much; but the full stomach of the rich man does not allow him to sleep."

God is the one who grants sleep.  See the following:

Psalms 4:8 (ESV)

8 In peace I will both lie down and sleep;

for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

Psalms 127:2 (ESV)

2 It is in vain that you rise up early

and go late to rest,

eating the bread of anxious toil;

for he gives to his beloved sleep.

 In today's age people medicate and activity to put themselves to sleep.   In the above proverb we see that when we walk with God we can be assured of a good night's sleep.   We will not only be free from fear but we will be filled with sweetness.   It is one thing to have sleep without fear, but it is another to have God give us sweet sleep.   When we meditate on God's Word and rejoice in God's Way we can be assured of a sweetness at night.   God promises to give sleep to those who trust in Him.   Allow yourself to rest in His care and love and you find that you sleep much better.  When we worry about life, riches, work, children and/or life, we steal sleep from ourselves.  Trusting in God is the best medicine for insomnia.
