Proverbs 10:22 (ESV)
The blessing of the LORD makes rich,
and he adds no sorrow with it.
In this proverb the second line illuminates the first line. The first line states that the Lord’s blessing can bring wealth. The second line offers further clarity by saying that when the Lord’s blessing brings wealth, He (the Lord) does not add sorrow to it. What a great thought! We all probably know people who are wealthy, or at least very well off. How many times have we seen those who seek riches fall into deep, deep trouble. This proverb tells us that if we seek God and He blesses us with wealth, it doesn’t come with trouble. Wow! Imagine selling that concept on Wall Street: You can have wealth and have a no trouble. We all recognize that having wealth brings a lot of responsibility, pressure and traps. If you want to avoid that, let the wealth come as you seek the Lord rather than seek wealth. You will still have taxes, but not trouble. When we think of "success" in life, we often, mistakenly, associate that with wealth. Perhaps this proverb helps us to define it better. Success in life, when blessed with wealth, will also mean no trouble associated with the wealth. So, when pursuing success in life, perhaps the blessing is that you can be successful without having wealth, or with having it, since, when it is from the Lord, it comes with no trouble.
