Proverbs 7:2

The book of Proverbs gives us insights into so many different areas of life. The book gives us instruction on how to live our lives for God. Here is a proverb that gives us insight about our focus:

Proverbs 7:2 (ESV)

keep my commandments and live;

keep my teaching as the apple of your eye;

In the above proverb we are told to keep God's Word as the apple of our eye.  The apple of the eye is the pupil of the eye.  One writer referred to the pupil as the "little man" of the eye.  This is because when a man is looking at someone the reflection you see in the pupil makes the figure he is viewing as a little man in his eye.  In Deuteronomy 32 we are told that God kept Jacob as the apple of His eye, meaning God keeps the nation of Israel at the center of His focus.   In Psalm 17:8 Solomon's father, David, asks God in a prayer to keep him as the "apple of His eye."    Again, knowing we are at the center of God's sovereign care is assuring.    However, in this proverb the emphasis is not on us being the apple of God’s eye, but on us keeping God's Word as the apple of our eye.   That would mean when others see us, they see God's Word reflected back.  That means when others see us, they see our focus.  Our focus is to not be on our own will, but on the Will of Him who sent us.   God's Word is our focus.  Nothing else and nothing more.  When people look into our eyes they should not see the world's values, the world's charms or the world's ambitions.   In this world it is tough for us to keep our focus on the Word.   But, if we fail to keep our eyes on the right focus we will find ourselves on the wrong path.  Which is the point of Proverbs.   The key to success in life is found in our relationship with God's Word (Joshua 1:9).
