Proverbs 21:2

The book of Proverbs gives us insights into so many different areas of life. The book gives us instruction on how to live our lives for God. Here is a proverb that gives us insight about God weighing the heart:

Proverbs 21:2 (ESV)

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes,

but the LORD weighs the heart.

The above proverb is often quoted by Pastors and Christians to non-Christians who are doing something wrong; using the verse to remind them that God is “watching.” However, it can also be applied to people who say their are believers and, who “think” they are right and are not. Take Cain. Cain offered a sacrifice he thought would be good and acceptable to God. But God weighs the heart. Take the Pharisees. They thought they were doing what was right with all their regulations; but God looks at the heart. God is a watcher of hearts. He is not concerned about our “outward” as much as He is our “inward.” Remember, God weighs the hearts. How does it look when He weighs yours?  Notice what God told Samuel when Samuel thought his choice of one of David’s brothers would work to be king in Saul place.  He thought the taller and bigger the better.  Here is what God said:

1 Samuel 16:7 (ESV Strong's)

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

Notice what Jesus said to the religious leaders of his day:

Luke 16:15 (ESV Strong's)

And he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

God guards us by knowing our hearts and leads us accordingly.   We can rejoice that even though we “think” we are on the right course, God ponders our hearts and leads us into ways of righteousness.

Isaiah 26:7 (ESV Strong's)

The path of the righteous is level;

you make level the way of the righteous.
