Proverbs 5:18

The book of Proverbs gives us insights into so many different areas of life. The book gives us instruction on how to live our lives for God. Here is a proverb that gives us insight about folly and sexual mischief:

Proverbs 5:18 (ESV)
Let your fountain be blessed,
and rejoice in the wife of your youth,
Solomon, in chapter five, is giving us a warning about adultery and particularly adulterous women, who, in Proverbs, represent a real woman and adultery, but also folly; the failure to trust God, thereby applying wisdom.   In these last few verses he is particular talking about making sure we physically control our bodies.   He uses metaphoric terms like "streams" (v. 16) and fountains (v. 18) to talk about the male sexual organs.  He wants the reader to have a complete and full enjoyment of the sexual experience.  But to do so he gives us the formula.  To truly allow yourself to enjoy sexual pleasures it must be done with the "wife of your youth."  Solomon is telling us that God has made the bedroom a place of honor and pleasure, if it is done within the context of His plan ... within the married partner of your youth.  In today's age the entire landscape is painted by Hollywood as completely different than Solomon's teaching.   Even our political world wants to change what God has decreed and decided and designed.  We can, in our waywardness, go astray of God's plan, but the reality of enjoyment, true  and lasting enjoyment comes when your "fountain" is blessed because you are enjoying what God intended with your spouse.   Fight it all you want, but true sexual pleasure comes from following God's plan.
