Proverbs 25:28 (NASB)
28 Like a city that is broken into and without walls
Is a man who has no control over his spirit.
Proverbs 25:28 (ESV)
28 A man without self-control
is like a city broken into and left without walls.
The only way to really understand this proverb is to understand how cities had to have walls around them for safety during Biblical times. Think of a fort in our day. If a city didn’t have walls to protect itself not only would the enemy be able to enter and destroy, but wild animals would come in at night and devour. So, the proverb is stating that those who have no self-control, are like an unsafe city where destruction will soon take place. In a city whose walls are broken down there may be a semblance of safety, but soon darkness will come and so too peace will slip into the night with the light. If we want to have safety and security in our lives we have to make sure we practice self-control. And, since self-control is a fruit of the Spirit, we simply have to submit each day and each moment to His control. He, in turn, builds a wall around our lives … like a wall around a city. Control your spirit or risk destruction.
