Proverbs 21:24 (ESV)
“Scoffer” is the name of the arrogant, haughty man
who acts with arrogant pride.
Pride is and will always be the downfall of every man. In this proverb Solomon gives us a few of the names that the prideful person runs by. The term "scoffer" seems to be apt as it shows the pride of a person in their response to truth. Scoffer's tend to be skeptical of any truth they don't create. They push back against God's Word and don't delight in the things of God. Their pride puts them into a place of not just ignoring truth, but outwardly rejecting and ridiculing the truth. The are so "arrogant" and "haughty" that they criticize those who present truth and the truth they present. If you see these three terms you can see a progression. Simple arrogance makes us haughty and a haughty attitude makes us scoff. When we act with insolent pride we are simply following this road to ruin. Only the fear of the Lord will stop this chain of events in a person's life. We need to quench the pride by coming to Christ and realizing we are but dust. We need to have God work in our hearts to defeat our pride. If not, we will eventually be the scoffer. That is what pride produces.
