Proverbs 26:14 (ESV)
As a door turns on its hinges,
so does a sluggard on his bed.
A door is a great thing. If you don't believe me, take a door off some room of your house and see how you like it. The door is not special. It just hangs there on the hinges. In fact, the door, without the hinges, does little good. The door just swings back and forth. It doesn't ever go anywhere. It does serve a small purpose. Even though it is nice to have a door, it is not essential. The point Solomon is making is that like a door that simply turns on the hinges so too a sluggard. It moves, but doesn't really go anywhere. Unlike the door, the sluggard gets little accomplished. He just moves from laying on one side, to laying on the other. The door at least separates, protects and conceals. The sluggard just turns. The sluggard is someone in Proverbs who has rejected God's Wisdom. He has no use for work or the Word. He has little use for labor and simply wants to live in leisure. Those who have found comfort in their beds don't find energy to go do work. When we reject truth we also fail to enjoy labor. One goes hand in hand with the other.
