Proverbs 16:25 (ESV)
There is a way that seems right to a man,
but its end is the way to death.
This proverb could be the alternate theme of the entire book of Proverbs. The theme of Proverbs is found in the first chapter of the book:
Proverbs 1:7 (ESV)
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction.
But, when we don't chose the fear of The Lord it is because we have been deceived, or deceive ourselves, that the road we are on is okay and safe. The entire book tells about the fool who is enticed by a road that looks great and feels smooth. Chapter seven demonstrates that theme in graphic form with the story of the naive one who is taken in by the smooth talking and sweet smelling women. The road "seems right" to him but in the end it was just a door to death. Achan, in the Joshua 7 thought that taking the silver and gold and hiding it under his tent floor was a safe and secure move. But, it ended in death. Satan loves to paint a path that looks like the "yellow-brick" road that ends up to be the bloody red road of death. He makes it smell nice; feel nice and look rosy. The disciple Judas thought 30 pieces of silver would be worth betraying our Lord. Demas, in 2 Timothy, thought something in this world was prettier than a walk with God. There is a way that seems right (ask educators, Wall Street and Hollywood); but the end is death.
