Proverbs 1:26-27 (ESV)
I also will laugh at your calamity;
I will mock when terror strikes you,
when terror strikes you like a storm
and your calamity comes like a whirlwind,
when distress and anguish come upon you.
It is hard to believe that in the midst of calamity anyone would laugh. This country, over the years, has had many calamities to react to and about. It is doubtful that anyone would laugh at them or mock them, as stated in the above proverb. When calamity comes the typical response is weeping, dread, mourning and/or anguish. And, if possible, delivery. Or, redemption. Or, salvation. Yet, in the above set of proverbs we read that God will not be mocked and, therefore, when others mock Him and deny Him, He, too, will mock them in their time of need. And, their time of need will be drastic. It will come quickly; like a whirlwind. It will be painful; like distress and anguish. It will be extensive; like dread and calamity. There is a lot of pain in the above verses and the world thinks God should keep it from that pain. The world, when calamity happens, always asks, "Where was God?" They should know that God is right there ... watching ... and, laughing. That just seems, to the world, as ungodly, rather than something God would actually say. Yet, man has rejected God. God owes man nothing. When storms come and destroy towns God has every right to laugh. When man rejects God and puts his trust in his own earthly goods or the worlds good and the worlds resources, then they have no right to claim God should bail them out. The next time calamity hits the world, ask them if they expected God to bail them out before the calamity hit. If they expected God BEFORE the calamity they can claim God's grace after the calamity. If they didn't expect God before the calamity they shouldn't claim God wasn't there to protect them from the calamity.
