Proverbs 20:20

The book of Proverbs gives us insights into so many different areas of life. The book gives us instruction on how to live our lives for God. Here is a proverb that gives us insight about how to treat your parents:

Proverbs 20:20 (ESV)

If one curses his father or his mother,

his lamp will be put out in utter darkness.

The truth behind this proverb is a sad truth.   Especially if you are father or mother.  The truth of the proverb tells us that how a child treats their parents is noticed by God.  It is not only noticed it is dealt with by God.   Paul, of course, tells us in his letter to Ephesians that honoring father and mother are key to New Testament principles.  He states that honoring parents was the only one of the Ten Commandments that comes with a promise: That it will be well with you.   So, to fail to honor them, and instead, curse them, will produce adverse affects.  In this proverb we are told, in the second line, that the adverse affect is that in the time of darkness, when you need light, there will be done.  This can be a reference to physical issues that will affect the child who cures his/her parents or it can be spiritually ... God will not provide the "light of His Word" in a time of "spiritual darkness."   You can't offend any of God's Word and expect no consequences.    Dishonor your parents and there will be consequences.
