Proverbs 26:8

The book of Proverbs gives us insights into so many different areas of life. The book gives us instruction on how to live our lives for God. Here is a proverb that gives us insight into what we honor:

Proverbs 26:8 (ESV)

Like one who binds the stone in the sling

is one who gives honor to a fool.

In our society we give honor to the strangest of things.   We pay large amounts of money (a way we show honor) to some of the most vain and void activities.    We celebrate (another way to show honor) successes that are simply bogus at best.   Solomon tells us that to give honor to something that is foolish makes about as much sense as putting a stone in a slingshot and then tying the stone in its place.  Fools and foolishness things can't comprehend wisdom and therefore it does not know about honor.   Athletes, actors and actresses, politicians, and musicians don't deserve most of the praise and honor we give them.  We honor them with our purchases and with our praise.   We only find out later what their real lives are all about.   We heap praise and appreciation on them only to later discover the evilness of their hearts.  God is the only one who deserves the praise and honor we give them.  Don't give honor to a fool or a foolish thing.   You are wasting something you could give to another. We need to be careful what we honor in our lives.
