Proverbs 24:21-22 (ESV)
My son, fear the LORD and the king,
and do not join with those who do otherwise,
for disaster will arise suddenly from them,
and who knows the ruin that will come from them both?
Solomon was a king. He understood the value of a man in the position of authority who was consistent and trustworthy. He also saw first hand those who weren't. He wanted to make sure his son and others (us included) knew the dangers of following someone in authority who was given to "change." He wants us to fear both God and those in authority and to avoid those who would lead us to change, for the sake of change and in rebellion to The Lord and to the King. If we follow The Lord in fear and the human authority, the King, in fear, we will be safe. But be warned: Don't follow or even associate yourself with those who avoid following The Lord and the King and want to change that direction. If you do, be aware: "Their calamity will rise suddenly. AND, that calamity will come from The Lord and the King. AND, who knows what that ruin will look like from them both? The Lord and the King are there to deal with those who want to move away from the consistent power of God's Word. The thought of the proverb is to warn us to stay away from those who pull us away from truth and to rely on The Lord and the King who are there to correct those who do.
