Proverbs 1:20 (ESV)
The Call of Wisdom
Wisdom cries aloud in the street,
in the markets she raises her voice;
We have to remember that when Solomon wrote these Proverbs there was no "mass" media, no billboards, no texting, no internet, no newspaper, no “x” number of channels on a dish, no magazines, no words on t-shirts, hats or boxers. However, in Solomon's day folly called out with as much vengeance as today in her endeavor to drown out wisdom. But wisdom is not to be undone. She calls out with the necessary intensity so that "all" hear her. She is in the plain open street ... in the square (a reference to where all business and community activities took place). Wisdom, however, does not look like folly. The eye of man is attracted to folly. Man’s heart is attracted to folly. The attraction of wisdom is only seen through the eye of the Spirit. So, to see wisdom you have to exercise the eye of the Spirit and your sensitivity to the Spirit. The Spirit sees wisdom despite the noise of the world. The Spirit can sort through the mass voices of evil and calls out to all. Heed the call. Our submission to Christ allows the Spirit to have full reign in us. That submission opens up the eye-gate to what the Spirit wants us to see and the ear-gate to what the Spirit wants us to hear. Some people watch mass-media and are enamored by it. A Spirit-led believer, who has submitted to Christ, sees through the shinny things and hears the voice of God and sees the dangers of the message. Wisdom is shouting in the streets. She is available to readily hear. But, only the believer who is submitted to the authority of Christ has their ears tuned to such a voice!!
