The book of Proverbs gives us a lot of instruction on a lot of different subjects. One subject that can keep us in God’s wisdom is Godly Follower-ship. Who we follow; where we follow; how we follow are all spoken about in Proverbs. Here is one of them about the value of wisdom:
Proverbs 3:14 (NASBStr)
For her profit is better than the profit of silver
And her gain better than fine gold.
Proverbs 3:14 (ESV)
for the gain from her is better than gain from silver
and her profit better than gold.
After outlining the wicked path of the unjust and the fool in the first two chapters of Proverbs, Solomon now wants to show us the value of a life with wisdom as our guide ... intimate friend. In our society today there is not much that is prized over silver and gold. In fact, every day on both the local and national media there is an ad to invest in gold and to by silver. It seems that many think this will be the only currency that has any value in a few years. According to these ads, in a "very short time" gold and silver will be the only thing we can use for trade and enterprise. Solomon, many, many years prior to those ads, tells us there is something of even greater value. He tells us that Wisdom, obtained by faith in the King of Wisdom, Christ, is more valuable than any amount of gold and silver. Now it is important to remember that Solomon had so much gold he was overlaying everything gold and silver (1 Kings 6:20-28; 1 Kings 10:22-28). It is one thing for a writer or preacher to say that wisdom is worth more than gold and silver when they are broke, poor or have little of either. But, to say so when you are the richest person who ever lived or will live (based upon God's testimony) you make a good case to everyone to seize hold of Wisdom. We spend so much time chasing good homes, cars and precious positions and power that we fail to remember that the one thing we need, want and will make us whole is available for free, by faith. Jesus is all we need. More precious than any amount of money. Jesus is wisdom. That is what Solomon is teaching in this proverb.
