Proverbs 8:12

The book of Proverbs gives us a lot of instruction on a lot of different subjects. One subject that can keep us in God’s wisdom is Godly Follower-ship. Who we follow; where we follow; how we follow are all spoken about in Proverbs. Here is one of them about the companions of wisdom:

Proverbs 8:12 (ESV)

“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,

and I find knowledge and discretion.

Proverbs 8:12 (New Living Translation)

“I, Wisdom, live together with good judgment.

I know where to discover knowledge and discernment.

Here is a proverb that speaks volumes about what wisdom is all about.  Solomon wrote the book of Proverbs to show us and teach us about wisdom.   He has told us on several occasions that it begins with the Fear of the Lord.   But in chapter eight he gives us his most in-depth treatment of wisdom.   He gives us insight in how to understand it and how to appreciate it and how to experience it.  In the above proverb we can see a real picture of the advantage of having wisdom from God.   Here we read the wisdom "dwells" with or "lives" with some great friends:  prudence and discretion.   This is Solomon's way of telling us that if we have wisdom we also have her companions: prudence (good judgement) and knowledge and discretion (discernment).   One of the most important pieces in our life is the ability to have good judgement and discernment.   We live in a world where these are two skill sets we need.   We are bombarded every day with evil and we need discernment.  These are companions of wisdom.   When we seek wisdom and when we find wisdom we get the discernment and discretion to deal with the evil we face.
