Proverbs 19:14 (ESV)
House and wealth are inherited from fathers,
but a prudent wife is from the LORD.
You can invest your money and accumulate your wealth. You can then will it to your children. You will be known as a special person and a good parent. There is nothing wrong with that thought process. Leaving something to your children is a commendable character quality. Yet, that type of gift pales in comparison to God providing a prudent wife to someone. Since the verse just prior to this one (v. 13) talks about the difficulty of a contentious wife, a prudent wife is something special and a gift from God. Solomon states a similar thought in the previous chapter (Proverbs 18:22). The fact that God provides these things and these relationships is important for us to remember. Solomon knew all about marriage. He had numerous wives and countless concubines. The marriage and concubine world had political, propagational and positional attributes to it. I don't pretend to fully understand it. But, it did qualify Solomon to know that if he had a wife that was prudent, that was special. It didn't just come like rain. She is special ... from The Lord.
