Proverbs 27:12
A prudent man sees evil and hides himself,
The naive proceed and pay the penalty.
What do you do when you see evil; when you see something contrary to God's Word? Do you pay the price of a ticket to go watch it? Do you purchase it? Do you befriend it? Do you marry it? This proverb seems to indicate how you respond toward evil (disobedience to God's Word) says something about your life and walk with God. A Godly man/women will run and hide when he/she sees evil. A naive man/women will simply proceed onward and eventually pay the price. In our modern society, the "running and hiding" aspect is often mocked. But, God says it is "prudent' to hide. It is the "naive" person who simply ignores the evil and proceeds onward and downward. The naive will eventually be penalized for their failure to heed the warnings of evil. God has given us our eyes to spot evil. He has given us His Word to be prudent about it. When we see evil we don't just stop. That seeing has to be mixed with God's Word which gives us prudence to avoid the evil. Don't ignore what you see - mix it by faith with His Word and you will find yourself "hiding" from evil. Probably the best example we have in someone who did NOT follow this proverb was the father of the man who wrote the proverb: David! David failed to hide himself when he saw the danger of Bathsheba bathing. If he had followed his son’s proverb, he would not have suffered for it in the way he did. If Lot would have seen the dangers that were in the city of Sodom and Gomorrah, he would have never lost his wife. If we look for danger and, by God’s strength and power, avoid it, we have to hide ourselves from it.
