Proverbs 19:10 (NASBStr)
Luxury is not fitting for a fool;
Much less for a slave to rule over princes.
Proverbs 19:10 (NIV1984)
It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury–
how much worse for a slave to rule over princes!
Folly in Proverbs is based upon rejection of God, a lack of fear for God, and/or no respect for God. The fool is someone who rejects all things God. They don't desire God's ways or His blessings. They want to get value in life without following God's principles for life. That is what makes their having blessing, in the form of money and possessions, so absurd. It just isn't right. Or, as Solomon states, it "is not fitting." Those who reject God should not live in blessing. Yet, it is important to remember that "luxury" is not the only blessings. Yet, Solomon uses "luxury" as a sign of blessing. He is saying how, in life, blessings, in the aspect of "luxury", are experienced by fools. That doesn't make it right or natural, however. So, too, someone who is a slave that rules over a royal leader. Slaves, in Solomon's society, are kept in check through the hierarchy of the day. They should not be in command, they are, by definition, the commanded. Solomon is telling us that, although we observe it often, rich fools and power slaves are not right. In this life we are going to see some things that are not natural. The world may think it is both true and natural for those who reject God to get material blessings. They even count on it. But, God is telling us that even though we see it, it is not fitting. It is not God's natural order. In the end, it won't be. God will eventually make it all right. But, in this life, we might see sin rewarded. That doesn't mean it will be in the end.
