Proverbs 1:6
To understand a proverb and a figure, The words of the wise and their riddles.
Life is a riddle. Life is a difficult to understand. Life is full of complex and revolving issues that are tangled and twisted into knots we can't untie or roads we can't even find on our maps ... if we can find our maps. Wisdom in Proverbs was given to us so that we will be able to understand these complex issues. The lost world studies their philosophy and their human psychology in hopes of scaling the mountain of the unknown. And, despite the vast availability of God's Word, they reject the truth of Scripture for their own words of wisdom. God has promised that by studying the proverbs we will understand the ridiculous poetry of this world and be able to put it in a framework of understanding. There is no reason to go through this world in the dark when we have the light of the Lord reigning inside of us. God has provided the key to unlock life. We can chart our course. He has given us the map with the proper roads. The world doesn’t understand this thought. When Miriam threatened Moses’ leadership, read what God said to her:
Numbers 12:7-10 (ESV)
7 Not so with my servant Moses. He is faithful in all my house. 8 With him I speak mouth to mouth, clearly, and not in riddles, and he beholds the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?” 9 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against them, and he departed.
10 When the cloud removed from over the tent, behold, Miriam was leprous, like snow. And Aaron turned toward Miriam, and behold, she was leprous.
God does not speak to us in riddles. He gives us wisdom to understand the riddles of the world. We can rejoice that the God of the universe knows the answers to the riddles. Often He creates them! You and I, as we study God’s wisdom, can understand life’s riddles. That’s why the book of Proverbs was written.
