Proverbs 29:9

The book of Proverbs gives us a lot of instruction on a lot of different subjects. One subject that can keep us in God’s wisdom is Godly Follower-ship. Who we follow; where we follow; how we follow are all spoken about in Proverbs. Here is one of them about correcting a fool:

Proverbs 29:9

When a wise man has a controversy with a foolish man, the foolish man either rages or laughs, and there is no rest.

If you have ever had to deal on a continual basis with someone who is absent a relationship with Christ and portrays their foolishness, you have a good understanding of this verse. God has given us some wisdom here to help our understanding and to remove some of the mystery as to why people go from one emotion to the next. The foolish man has no stability in his life because he has no relationship with truth. He can't, in his foolish state, find a balance and therefore stay on a given course. Instead what happens is that he might rage one time and then the next time be laughing. Foolishness is like a roller-coaster; it has no straight lines and leaves you in a constant state of highs and lows. Let's make sure we are acting in wisdom and have a connection to truth - that will give us stability. But, if you have to deal with foolishness that will be a constant problem.  When our emotions seem to be unstable it might be because we have something that is cognitively unsettling happening in our mind.    We often have emotional moments because of the way we frame one thing over another.   When we have truth in our lives, it gives us a lens to frame an event.   If we can frame an event through the character and the person of Christ (true Wisdom) we can see our emotions become stable. A wise man can’t always relate with a foolish man because they operate by different sets of truth.   A foolish man rejects the knowledge of God, a wise man embraces the knowledge of God.  That is the definition of both in Proverbs. So, what Solomon is telling us is that those who are wise will allow wisdom to guide them and to stabilize their emotions.  The foolish man does not have that truth.
