Proverbs 29:8 (ESV Strong's)
8 Scoffers set a city aflame,
but the wise turn away wrath.
This is a very powerful proverb that would normally be overlooked for its lack of clarity. We don't always understand the concept of "scoffing” (or, scorning in some translations). So, when we see it used in a proverb we pause. Scoffers/scorners mock at sin. Scorners don't fear the Lord. Scoffing is a way evil men (unbelievers) treat truth. So, when you have a scorner in a city (business, organization, church, school, etc.) you will eventually "set it aflame." Scorning does not embrace truth so the only result you will get with scorning is destruction. The opposing approach to scorning is a wise person who deals with the real issue ... anger. Scorners are angry at God or life and express it by turning themselves and others from the truth. A wise person deals with the real issue ... the anger. A wise person doesn't allow the anger the scorner brings to take root. They turn away from the anger and don't allow it to have breath. If you want to prevent a scorner from setting the place on fire don't give them a chance to fuel their anger. They have an approach to undermine truth and peace. They have an agenda of self promotion. Wise people turn away from their anger and turn their anger away.
