Proverbs 20:12

The book of Proverbs gives us a lot of instruction on a lot of different subjects. One subject that can keep us in God’s wisdom is Godly Follower-ship. Who we follow; where we follow; how we follow are all spoken about in Proverbs. Here is one of them about the eye and the ear:

Proverbs 20:12 (ESV)

The hearing ear and the seeing eye,

the LORD has made them both.

We often hear things that cause us to sin.  On numerous occasions we see things that lead us into the sin that separates us from God.   We might find ourselves in a place where we despise our eyes for what they behold and hate our ears for what they filter into our minds.  But, Solomon is telling us that the equipment that God gave us is not the problem.   God gave us amazing tools to sense the world.   It is sin and Satan and the world that use those tools to separate us from God.   God has made both the ear and the eye.   God has given us these tools to sense the beauty He has created.  The sunset is nothing without the eye.   The sound of the cricket in the stream at night would be nothing but silence without the ear.   Yes, these tools, that Paul calls "members" in Romans 6, can be used to entice our hearts to sin:

Romans 6:12-14 (ESV)

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

Our “members” are to be presented to God each day, by grace.  Our eyes and ears are “members” that are to be presented each day to God for His enjoyment and His rule.
