Proverbs 6:7 (NASBStr)
Which, having no chief,
Officer or ruler,
What happens when we don't have a chief, officer or ruler? What would the average person do at work with no foreman? Would would the student do with no teacher? What would the highway do with no officer? Think about that thought. In this proverb we are picking one proverb out of a series of proverbs about the ant. Solomon is giving us some insight into the ant so that we would emulate it in our own work ethic. Sound wisdom does not only give us understanding and discernment, but, as here, work ethic. In our society, as in most societies, we MUST have leaders. Leaders are needed to establish order and productivity in our society. But, the ant doesn't need such structure. Solomon wants us to consider this. We are to take from the lesson of the ant that true wisdom does not need someone to tell them what to do. The ant uses wisdom to motivate them to gather food for the winter. In a wise society and a wise culture we don't need a high structure of leadership. When wisdom is in place the wise know when to work and how to work. When wisdom is gone, like in our society, we can be assured that work ethic can only be had but a strong leadership base. This does not mean that wise people don't need authority or should resist authority. Quite the opposite is true. Wise people DON'T NEED authority but DON'T RESIST authority, either.
