Proverbs 5:11

The book of Proverbs gives us insights into so many different areas of life. The book gives us instruction on how to live our lives for God. Here is a proverb that gives us insight about the consequences of sexual sins:

Proverbs 5:11 (ESV)

and at the end of your life you groan,

when your flesh and body are consumed,

The theme of Proverbs chapter five is what happens when we fall into sexual sin. It is too bad those who are tempted to fall into sin don't read this proverb first. The problem with sexual sin is that it is so satisfying in the world of the immediate. Sex is immediate gratification. The penalty, or consequences, of sexual sins doesn't kick in right away. In this verse we see the final consequences outlined. Perhaps a good way to avoid the penalty or results of sexual sin is to read this verse when tempted with sexual sins. The problem is we don't read this proverb and we don't see the end of what we do. We are so busy feeding our immediate lust that we simply don't see the future. Faith looks for the future. Flesh looks for immediate gratification. Faith trusts in what we can see rather than what we feel. Use your eye of faith rather than your flesh of feel.  When we fail to act prudently (the goal of the Proverbs) we will see the above truth enter our lives. In the end, we groan.   We fail to see the impact of the immediate on the eternal.  When we order our lives we need to make sure we do so with right choices; choices that reflect wisdom that is in line with the fear of the Lord.   Although the immediate context of this chapter is the poor choices of sexual desires, remember, Folly is being personified as an adulterous woman.  This is really just about choosing Godliness over Folly.  Correct choices are governed by the Fear of the Lord.  Those who Fear the Lord are going to avoid choices based upon the immediate.
