Proverbs 30:4
Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name or His son’s name? Surely you know!
This verse must be referring to the actions of God through His Son Christ. The proverb is a wonderful commentary on the union of God and Christ in the creation of the heavens and earth. The only confusing portion of the proverb is what does Solomon mean by stating, "Surely you know!" The implication of that phrase can take on several aspects. It can mean that they should know this! Or, that they would know it if they were full of wisdom (note context). The words may be sacrastic so that the hearers of this particular section are "put in their place" as not really posessing wisdom (Ithiel and Ucal). The point of the proverb is that God, through Christ, is greater than all and those who wish to own wisdom, use wisdom or be gifted with wisdom mut come to this truth. The world professes wisdom through learning, age and experience. The older you are and more educated you are and more traveld you are is supposed to make you that much more full with wisdom. However, in this chapter we read that the key to wisdom is to acknowledge and understand that God-Christ-Spirit is on High! The recognition of God in the world is the initial step to obtaining wisdom. The world is attempting to make God one of many gods. They want God to be "like us" but more powerful ... like a flawed super hero. Instead we see that He controls the worlds and is sole possessor of ultimate power. Confess God's power and position in this world and make the first step to being wise.
