Proverbs 11:26 (ESV)
The people curse him who holds back grain,
but a blessing is on the head of him who sells it.
Proverbs 11:26 (NIV1984)
People curse the man who hoards grain,
but blessing crowns him who is willing to sell.
This proverb is tied, in theme, to the one that proceeds it. Note what we read in Proverbs 11:25 ...
Proverbs 11:25 (NASBStr)
The generous man will be prosperous,
And he who waters will himself be watered.
Solomon is telling us that when we have resources (in this case, "grain") and withhold it and don't offer it in some way (in the case of verse 26, by "selling" it and in the case of verse 25 by giving it away) we might end up with an abundant amount of the resource (grain) but lose our reputation and fail to be in line for God's blessing. God is watchful as to what we do with our resources. That could be money, grain, property, wisdom, skills. He gave us those things and expects us to distribute them to those who need them. In Psalm 112:5-9 we read the benefits that are bestowed on the gracious and generous man. We can hoard the things God gave us, or even sell them at an outlandish amount. But, by doing so, we hinder God from being gracious to us and blessing us. We put ourselves in a way where God can bless us in His grace when we are gracious to others. It is important to remember that God is gracious to us because He is gracious. He does not bless us because we are good or do good things. Blessings flow from the graciousness of God's heart. But, WHEN we obey His Word we place ourselves in the avenue of God's blessing. God wants to bless us. He wants to make sure we bless others, as well. Don't hoard your resources no matter what they are. He allows us to sell them, as stated in the above proverb. Thankfully, however, He simply gives them to us.
