Proverbs 4:8 (ESV)
Prize her highly, and she will exalt you;
she will honor you if you embrace her.
If you take hold of fire you will get burnt. If you take hold of manure you will eventually stink. If you take hold of money you will eventually be consumed by it. We get the principle behind this way of thinking. Solomon uses that same thought, however, in regard to Wisdom. If we take hold of wisdom we will get the blessings of wisdom. If we "prize her" she will exalt us. If we "embrace her" she will bring honor to us. The challenge we have, however, is that when Wisdom exalts us and honors us, we don't always see it and it seldom happens immediately. Wisdom takes her time when she honors us and exalts us. The worlds temptations (sensuality; materialism; etc) typically gives immediate results. Wisdom is the result of a life of faith. Faith is not always seen NOW (see Hebrews 11). Solomon choose wisdom over material possessions, power and prestige and God ended up giving him all of that. If we prize and exalt wisdom we can be sure that we , too, will be exalted and honored. But, it takes time. By faith, honor wisdom in your life and God will bless you.
