Proverbs 14:15

The book of Proverbs gives us insights into so many different areas of life. The book gives us instruction on how to live our lives for God. Here is a proverb that gives us insight about naïveté:

Proverbs 14:15 (ESV)

The simple believes everything,

but the prudent gives thought to his steps.

We make fun of the person who believes anything.   We think that is humorous.    It doesn't appear as though Solomon is making a joke, however.   Naivety is not humorous in Proverbs.   Having a life absent of wisdom is reserved for fools, simpletons and scorners ... according to Solomon.   In comparison to the naive one is the wise man in Proverbs.  He doesn't aimlessly wander down a path without first considering his steps.   The word here, "considered" is the Hebrew, "bin."   It is a very common word used over 100 times in the O.T.  It means to have understanding and in this verse, perhaps, discernment.   Each step the wise man (sensible) discerns each step while the naive one simple believes anything.   The naive one doesn't consider or discern his path, much less, like the sensible man, his steps.   Solomon is teaching us to not rush in ... "only fools rush in."  We are to make sure each step we take is to be within the confines of God's Word and the Fear of The Lord.   Naivety is not humorous for the one who fears The Lord.   It is a disaster.   Use the discernment God has given you for each step you take.   Don't go blindly down the path.
